Here's my "ghetto-duino" complete with LCD!

EDIT: Had to put this picture at the top.. everyone needs their LMR dedication! :D

Stupid LCD... it's 1 pixel short of looking perfect! cuts off part of the first w :/

Well I finally got my camera taking pictures I felt were satisfactory, so you may be getting an excessive amount of pictures of random stuff. :D

Here's the top of my "proto-duino" so far! Turns out I wired the button wrong.. but more about that later! I'll be throwing in an RF receiver and Transmitter as soon as I get the board all super-clean!:)

The top 4 pins are RX, 5v, GND, TX for easy uploading if I ever need to! Of course, I got my debug LED on the left, connected to pin 13.

The bottom female headers are for my LCD I plan on putting in!

Bottom left is where I messed up on the button.. no comment. (It was late.. leave me alone!)

Here's the fixed version! It's ALIIIVEE! Top left, I just soldered the button onto the board.. took the wire back, and moved it. I'm sure there's easier ways to wire this.. but first time making my own "circuit" so I'm excited!

It's ALIIIVEE! Just borrowing my board for uploading sketches, rather than buying an FTDI chip or whatever I'd need.

Red LED's have never looked so good before! :D

Here's the LCD, sitting on the top of the case. The case snaps together using the top and bottom pieces. Just need to cut the case (with uber precision) so I hopefully keep it looking semi-professional!

On the left is the top of the case, on the right, is the bottom with the 2 "snap-on" parts ready to be snapped!

Here's from the side, those 2 holes is what snaps in. Push those in with a jumper wire, and the case opens up! (need to open the opposite side as well)

I got it soldered right the first time, go me! It's... very messy! I had to take off the copper tracks on the board to get it to work correctly.. so not too sure how to secure the female header, I guess it's time to pull out the hot-glue gun!

Here's another perspective.. The LCD is plugged into the Female headers so I don't have to keep it in there permanently.

  1. Nokia 6610 132x132 pixel color LCD
  2. Ultra Bright Red LED (Oh, and I mean BRIGHT, got 100 of 5 colors, free resistors for 5v and 12v, for $7)
  3. 16MHZ Crystal (Like 16.670 actually, but who's counting:D)
  4. Multipurpose Printed Circuit Board
  5. 2x 20pin Retention Contact (IC Socket)(Only 2 they had in store, I'm impatient:D)
  6. Hook-up Wire
  7. 90 Degree Male Headers (bent from jumper wire, these things are AMAZING for breadboards)
  8. Atmega 168 (Arduino Duemilanove/Diecimilla) (I purchased another Arduino and a 328 upgrade, so this was a spare)

Really cool idea, having a multipurpose control/interface box thingy. Nice work with the LCD too.

With the crystal, dont forget that it isnt an exact 16Mhz. If you need precise delays or timing everything may be slightly out of whack. Servo control etc might not work exactly the way you expect.

Well, hopefully I don’t

Well, hopefully I don’t need to rely on the speed too much, I realize it’s going to be a good handful of MS off, which might be bad for the RF setup I’m going to use.

But I guess I won’t know until I test it! I did some simple Serial connections, just to see if it would seem off to the human eye… and well, it might be off, but not enough for me to notice. (I know I’m not going to notice like 50 ms, which in microcontroller time, that’s alot) But I didn’t have any, kind of just picked them up with an order I had placed on eBay, 3 for $1, so I was like hell yeah.

I still got to find some buttons that will interface nicely with the case, hopefully bring out some selection buttons for a menu next. I bought 100 push buttons for $6, but they’re the standard buttons for use in like breadboards and such so they don’t really “work” with the case, may be time to get creative!
