Disassembling RC Car for Chassis

Hello, I am putting together a quick robot, and I figured I could skip a couple of steps by purchasing a remote controlled car, taking the frame off, and using the chassis as a preassembled remote controllde base.

Has anyone does this before and has any tips? What cars are good for this, and do any specifically have better chassises? Thanks!

About a year ago I used one

About a year ago I used one of these for a project. Costs $100-130 depending on the day. I can attest that it’s a good quality chassis for the price and is very rugged. Lots of other great options out there though. Here’s a link to the writeup I did over that project.

Tank model
I was able to use differential steering when I used a basic Walmart 1/6 Model Sherman tank. It was large enough for everything I needed inside.

I have done that

I have done that before: https://www.robotshop.com/letsmakerobots/beetleduino

I did not proceed since the plastic gear just lost all it’s teeth but basically it’s a cheap and quick solution. Figure out to what pad you need to connect the output pins of your controller to “override” or “emulate” the remote signal.
