It has been ages since i last posted something here! I miss LMR!
Okay, so BB-8 is insanely cute and I have set out to build one! I'm going for a completely functional one with a moving head, below I will describe my plan and will continue to update this thread with info as the build progresses.
The belly of BB-8 will house a three wheeled omni-wheel robot. The wheels are angled so that they completely touch the inner part of the circle. Will use lead-acid batteries to add weight to the robot for added stability. (later changed to Lipo).
The belly and head of BB-8 will be made of Styrofoam that i will reinforce. Its not planned for this robot to go off-road and it will be well cared of. Im okay with it being "somewhat weak". The head will surely be supported by magnets placed on an inside arm or something, actuated by servos. Haven't figured out the complete head thingy yet...
For the control it will have a circuit inside with 2 subsystems for AHRS and RC control. the head will have its own circuit for a bit of lights and sounds. it will be commanded via Xbee from the main board.
I have under my disposal an LPKF s103 circuit plotter, a CNC machine and 3D printers. The build should progress nicely and provide some neat engineering porn for you guys! Long live the machines!
