Varistor
would any varistor do?

There is no varistor used in this project, so I assume you either mean the potentiometer, or the light-dependant resistor?
varistor - LDR, potatoe - aardappel
I mistakenly put a “varistor” in the schematic. Figuring that any component that varies its resistance is called a variable-resistor = varistor.
For the record (and a laugh):
I WAS WRONG ABOUT THE VARISTOR!
It’s an Light Dependant Resistor (LDR). It’s resistance is very much abeying Ohm’s law, under any given lighting condition. The varistor on the other hand has “a significant non-ohmic current–voltage characteristic”. I learned that a minute ago, thanks to Telefox’ comment.
To be specific, I seem to remember this LDR is a M9660. But any type will do in this application. The potentiometers are there to tune the control function and balance out the steering.
I chose this LDR because it i so small and flat. The surface measures 5x5 mm.
Oh and Lachee, all this can be found at the bottom of the post. My apologies for the confusing schematic. No need to mail me about it. Just write your questions here.
Hehe, in my experience
Hehe, in my experience electronics is the worst field for poor naming conventions! I won’t even start on the whole “current vs. electron flow” topic…
signal strength
what strength is the transistor (low, medium,High)
Its OK i figured it out
