Yesterday the
Korean government unveiled two new unmanned robotic millitary vehicles in their continuing effort to roboticize their military. The vehicles, dubbed XAV's, are developed by Korea's Agency for Defense Development and have the capability for remote controlled operation or autonomous. One of the vehicles is primarily targeted toward surveilance while the other is equipped with weapons for combat situations.
The surveillance XAV is a 1.2-ton vehicle designed to reconnoiter and patrol in the field. It can run at a maximum 30 kilometers per hour. The battery-propelled vehicle is equipped with a 5.56-millimeter machine gun.
The other, smaller, vehicle is equipped with a machine gun and can operate at a maximum speed of about 28 mph.
The entire project has a cost of about $36 million USD. There are also plans for robotic "dog-like soliders" to be used in combat situations. "The robots, equipped with eight legs, will be able to explore rugged terrain with highly sophisticated navigation systems."
I don't know about you, but if an eight-legged robot with a gun started coming toward me, I'd run. Fast. Maybe Korea is on the right track.
