Hard Times for Boeing's X-45C Robotic Plane

ImageThe Air Force no longer wants Boeings X-45 unmanned airplane. The Joint Unmanned Combat Air Systems program has been scrapped by the Pentagon, along with the $800 million set aside to build and purchase three of the X-45Cs. Boeing will now probably try and compete against the Northrop Grumman X-47 for use on aircraft carriers. Unfortunately, the X-47 was specifically designed to do this, whereas the X-45C wasn't.

The X-45C was designed to knock out enemy air-defense systems, complementing the role of traditional fighter jets. It was designed to fly at 40,000 feet and carry 4,500 pounds of weapons while conducting combat missions deep into enemy territory.

We've written previously about developments with the X-45. I'd hate to see it go.
