On July 9, 2026, 1X Technologies did something unusual for a humanoid company: instead of showing off a robot walking, dancing, or doing a backflip, it showed off a hand. Just a hand. And that choice says almost everything about the bet 1X is making.
Most of the humanoid race right now is pointed at the factory floor. 1X pointed its newest reveal at your kitchen counter. Because if a robot is ever going to earn a place inside a home, it will not be by walking through the door - it will be by what it can do once it is standing at the sink. That means hands. Real ones. Hands that can hold a wine glass without shattering it and pick up a single grape without turning it into juice.
The new NEO hand carries 25 degrees of freedom per hand - 22 in the fingers and palm, plus 3 at the wrist. But the headline number is not the point. The point is how those joints move.
Conventional robotic hands bury a motor and a heavy gearbox at each joint, with gear reductions on the order of 100:1 to 200:1. That makes them strong and precise, but also stiff and numb - force cannot travel back through the gear train, so the hand cannot feel what it is touching. 1X went the other way. Its in-house 1X Tendon Drive places the motors in the forearm and routes proprietary tendons through the wrist to the fingers, using very low gear ratios (roughly 5:1 to 15:1). The result is a hand that stays backdrivable: push on a finger and the force travels all the way back to the motor. Every joint is simultaneously an actuator and a force sensor - what 1X calls force transparency.

That design unlocks two things a home robot cannot live without. First, dexterity: in its demos, NEO's hands assemble LEGO, pick up screws and coins, screw in a light bulb, plug in a USB-C cable, pour tea, and lift a roughly 20 lb kettlebell. Second, safety: because the fingers yield instead of clamping, a hand that gets slapped, pinched, or caught simply gives way rather than crushing what is in front of it. As founder Bernt Børnich put it, the team built them "to match or surpass human capability across every dimension that matters."
There is more engineering hiding in the details. The hand is IP68 waterproof - you can rinse it under running water - and built from food-safe polymers, with a functional tactile skin across the fingertips that reads force, contact location, and shear to detect slippage in real time. 1X says it can produce around 10,000 of these hands this year, with finger assemblies tested over millions of cycles. This is not a lab prototype. It is meant to ship on every NEO.
Here is what makes 1X stand out. Almost everyone else building a serious humanoid in North America is aiming at industry first.
1X is the outlier. NEO is designed for the home - a roughly 168 cm, 30 kg robot that runs at about 22 dB (quieter than most kitchen appliances), can carry around 25 kg, and is wrapped in a soft, compliant shell so it is safe to be near. It will not do everything on its own yet: 1X is candid that NEO operates roughly 60 to 70 percent autonomously at launch, with a remote human Expert Mode stepping in for tasks it cannot handle, and the robot learning from each of those sessions over time.
The company behind it has been pointed at the home for a while. Founded in Norway in 2014 (as Halodi Robotics), rebranded to 1X in 2022, and now headquartered in Palo Alto with manufacturing in California and Norway, 1X is backed by the OpenAI Startup Fund and EQT Ventures. NEO is available to reserve now at $20,000 outright or $499 per month, with first US deliveries expected late 2026 and international markets in 2027.
Step back and the picture gets bigger than any single robot. North America has a handful of credible humanoid players - fewer than ten, realistically around seven when you count 1X, Figure, Tesla, Apptronik, Agility, Boston Dynamics, and Canada's Sanctuary AI.
China is a different order of magnitude. According to reporting from Fortune citing China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country counts more than 140 humanoid manufacturers and over 330 models. And it is not just headcount: Chinese firms shipped an estimated 80 to 85 percent of the world's humanoid robots in 2025, with companies like AGIBOT and Unitree each moving 5,000-plus units - while the highest-profile US names shipped a few hundred at most.
That is the real stakes behind the NEO hand reveal. The competition is not only about who has the best fingers. It is about who can build them at scale, close to home, and put them where people actually are. 1X betting on the living room instead of the loading dock is a wager that the biggest long-term market for humanoids is not the enterprise - it is the household. Whether that bet pays off before China's volume advantage compounds is the story to watch for the rest of the decade.
