RobotShop PS2 controller

Hi,

first of all, I hope you guys has a merry christmas. I received robot stuff this X-mas and I received this PS2 controller :

robotshop.ca/home/products/r … oller.html

I find it nice, and the thec guy said it would work with the abb and all. but, it doesn’t. I think it’s just a problem in the controller, I put the batteries in and turn the switch on and 3 lights turn on for half a second and then turn off. I tried the program from lynxmotion that is suppose to let you know what you press like button in the debug window, and it doesnt work, but theres an open light in receiver. So I guess its the controller, because I tripple checked evrything. And usaly a wireless controller has a light that opens to let you know if it works…

Anyone ever had this controller?

Sam, Thx

Do you have a PS2 game console you can try the controller on? If it will work on that it should work for robots. However if it works on the game, but not on the bot Board we will try to help you. Even though it’s Robot Shop’s responsibility to support their non standard controller for use with the Bot Board. The first big question is Atom or Atom Pro? Give us all the nit picky details and we will try to help.

Hi,

I am using a Basic Stamp 2 and I don’t have a playstation, it passed thru my head a couple of times that idea, if I go to my friends house I will test it, but I thinks he’s gone. I sent an E-mail at robotshop, but they didn’t answer yet. :frowning: I thinks thats all.

Sam

So, I tested it on a playstation 2. It worked fine and know it doesn’t work on the bot board so I can assume that I need the 1K pullup resistor on pin 7. tomarow I will go look for the resistor, but I do I put the resistor on pin 7?

thx for any clarifications.

Sam

Ug… You need to press Robot Shop to provide you with usable code. They can’t just sell their own untested, undocumented, nonstandard controller and expect lynxmotion to write code for it! :smiling_imp:

I will tell you everything I can to help.

o You don’t need to solder any pullup resistor to the Bot Board! That is only if you are using an Atom Pro…

o For a BS2 you must use the PS2 port that is specifically designed for it. It has an inverter on the data line which is required by the BS2.

o The 3rd party PS2 controllers are faster than the Sony tethered one. There is no guarantee that that controller will work with a slow BS2. An Atom may be required.

o The fact that the Robot Shop has our BS2/PS2 tutorial linked tells me they never tested it, the just assumed it would work. :frowning:

o Obviously I don’t have one of their controllers, so I can’t try to make it work anyway. Don’t send yours to me…

o Check out the latest issue of Servo magazine for more information on this subject. Pete Miles and I spent a great deal of time on this Atom / Stamp / PS2 controller issue. Well Pete did all the testing and research.

Pete may be willing to help you, I dunno…

Yes I know, I’m frustareted at them, it’s anoying, my parents specifacly asked them if it would your with the BS2 and mini ABB and the said yes, so it doesn’t work and I send them an e-mail asking if it’s normal for it not to light up and they don’t even know the answer!!! Before putting the damn product on your shelves you test it! They gave me an answer without even checking, and they are not hable to answer my questions, they avoid them!!! And they said to ask Lynxmotion for technical suport!!! It’s their controller that doesn’t work with it, they should have support themselves! And they even but your tutorial under… man, They lost a client with that ! :imp: I think I am going to return it and buy the Lynxmotion one instead, but it just costs a lot in shipping, for it to come here, go back and then for the LM one to come back lol, I spent more than it’s actulay worth…

anyway I love Lynxmotion since it has great customer survice and great prooducts, so Thank you!

EDIT: Evrything with Robotshop is cool, read my message below.

The PS2 controller from lynxmotion will work with the BS2 and mini ABB right?

Thx, Sam

The only testing I have done with the BS2 is with the original sony brand tethered controller. Pete says in his article that he was able to use our controller with a BS2P and PX only. The BS2 is too slow for it. You should check out the magazine I mentioned if possible.

Hello Sam,

Firstly, we wish to apologize. The new Icon controllers are untested with the BS2.

Secondly, we will be issuing a full refund (as previously offered to you) for the controller you purchased. There is no need to send it back to us.

The RobotShop Team

Wow, I think that was very kind of them. I buy from Robotshop all the time and I have had great customer service. Its good that they are going to test that product now. Way to go sam, you made a difference!

ok, Thank you! thanks for your answer!!

Message about the controller and refund received. Thank you, this restores my confidence in Robotshop. Thank you for responding so fast. Hope to be doing business again with you soon. I thought it would be a big deal and complicated to get a refund or whatever, but it was a breeze! Thank you again!
