Opinions

I became a member of Let's Make Robots a couple days ago.  That didn't last long.  I had been told what a helpful and friendly site this is.  That isn't the impression I got.  I replied to a post that I felt was giving bad advice.  I won't link to it.  It is easy enough to find if you like.I asked the poster, who is apparently a fourteen year old, to clarify their answer because I was afraid someone might damage their equipment following that advice.  the repsonse to that was basically that it was only a nine dollar board so who cared if they blew it up.  My response was that the reply was not helpful and was unfriendly.  Up to now, no one else had said anything.  Then the firestorm started.  Immediately after quoting the part I felt made it unfriendly, I was baited in to the shout box.  Fool that I am, I took the bait.  I will post a transcript of that below.  I won't apologize because I don't feel I did anything wrong.  I would rather not apologize than to make a non-sincere apology.  I am sure many will disagree. You are entitled to your opinion.  Feel free to trash me in the comments.  You won't be the first.

Yahmez: Cev, did you say you are still tweaking MobBob?
Yahmez: *shakes off troll outfit* Heh sorry guys, I just am not gonna stand for that kinda bull.
 cevinius: Yep.
 Yahmez: *GPIO
Yahmez: Pi GIPO are so easily abused to boot!
cevinius: "Stop the abuse! Save Pi boards from misinformed owners!"
Yahmez: The worst part of those type of situations is no apologies. Man up, admit your mistakes. Like Noah did.
Duane Degn: It wasn't until I began publicly shaming him that he finally made the video private.
Duane Degn: I had previously emailed him about it several times. Apparently I wasn't the only one.
Yahmez: KTBH if you are taking notes, DD's link shows how to rebut bad advice without trolling FYI.
cevinius: I suspect some of the quoted "nice work" comments were from people who didn't try it.
Duane Degn: He deletes any posts on his YouTube account which mentioned the problem.
Duane Degn: I thought so too. He claimed thousands of boards were wired as instructed but never offered a correction.
Yahmez: Seemed odd to lock the thread over really. Not heated at all.
Yahmez: As opposed to my smack talk.
Duane Degn: I'm not the only one who thinks someone on the Pi Foundation is related to the guy.
Yahmez: Lol! You were very nice about pointing out the issue.... repeatedly.
Duane Degn: There were three threads locked within a couple of days.
Duane Degn: It was unfriendly enough to get the thread locked.
Duane Degn: It was unfriendly enough to get the thread locked.
Duane Degn: Well, I had unfriendly thoughts about the twerp.
Yahmez: If that's unfriendly I'll eat my hat.
Duane Degn: I was unfriendly to a 14 year old (he may have been 15). http://tinyurl.com/orr2cfj
cevinius: Hi gg, dd, Yahmez
Yahmez: Hey Duane, Hi Cev!
Duane Degn: Hi all.
ggallant: Playimg with wheels
Duane Degn: The nice thing about forums is others can catch bad advice.
Yahmez: How'd you manage that with your blazing fast internet GG?
Yahmez: Blue smoke and bad advice are part of the learning process... lol
ggallant: Guess i missed the excitement.
cevinius: Heck I try things all the time that are probably not good ideas... :P
Yahmez: That's exactly it Cev.
cevinius: That seems like appropriate forum behaviour to me.
cevinius: In Noah's case, I think he was trying to be helpful and sharing his own experiences. Then others chimed in to correct, etc.
cevinius: To put it in context, there have been threads in the past where people said forum comments were unfriendly.
Yahmez: If you're shocked then you don't know me very well.
Yahmez: You could have said a lot of things, but Noah is anything but unfriendly. He's a good kid.

KattTheBountyHunter: I'm not offended. Just in shock. I do hope you have a nice day.
Yahmez: Hey man, you can be offended by me all you want.
Yahmez: He's friendly as can bKTBH could said many things but he took the 'unfriendly' route. Sorry, just feel obliged to call out BS.
KattTheBountyHunter: interesting. intentionally trying to offend someone and calling them a troll is standing up for someone?
cevinius: Noah did share his experiences, and then he even apologised. Good on you for standing up for him.
Yahmez: Trolls, what would the internet be without them? (rhetorical question)
Yahmez: Thought so.
Yahmez: Feel good telling a 14 year old he's unfriendly?
KattTheBountyHunter: Thank you for verifying. I do hope you have a wonderful day.
Yahmez: Yea spot on. ::)
KattTheBountyHunter: but it does seem my unfriendly comments were on the mark
KattTheBountyHunter: If you are attempting to offend me i am afraid it isnt that easy
Yahmez: ::)
Yahmez: Whoops, I did not mean to post a pic of grumpy cat is anyone would take it as me being unfriendly... my bad.

So you are free to form your own opinion about me.  I’ve formed mine about Lets Make Robots.
I hope you all have a nice day.

I agree with OB1. Please
I agree with OB1. Please look at other threads, and you’ll find that there is some name calling and outright impoliteness. This really isn’t a moderate community.

And the shout box is less moderated. The SB is where people can say pretty much anything they want. I have been offended by some things there and just didn’t comment on them. I’d ignore the SB comments. This is a very odd community and we generally like it.

And some of my posts have gone beyond unfriendly right into telling people they were wrong. When I’ve done that and been wrong, I’ve appologized.

Your post was correct and most people agreed with you.

As for Noah, well… Every family needs an overactive over friendly lab puppy. Not saying he’s a dog, but I don’t think I was ever that enthusiastic.

At least he tries things and he has a lot of ideas. The ratio of good ideas to bad ideas is improving, but don’t tell him I said that. I have a rep as a grumpy old man to keep.

I’m not offended and my

I’m not offended and my feelings aren’t hurt.  I am aware of how the world is.  There are plenty of people who behave like spoiled toddlers when they don’t get their way.  Which is exactly my point.  I said that Noah’s response of who cares if it blows up was unfriendly (mostly toward the person asking the question, not me.)  I stand by that.  To say I don’t care if the advice I give you causes your stuff to be destroyed is unfriendly.  You (and Yahmez) are free to disagree.  I never condemned Noah, nor will I do that now.  I pointed out that it was unfriendly, and I stand behind doing that.  But when Yahmez disagreed he(?) very much took the low road, thus very strongly making the case for this being an unfriendly place.  One or two others chimed in and urged him on

I have no problems with Noah, and I am very sorry that he got drug into this nonsense.  I have an issue with his initial advice and his response, and I said what I thought.  I had no idea he was 14, and it doesn’t matter.  Anyone saying things like that should have it pointed out to them, whether they are 14 or 74.  I will not apologize for that. If I am a terrible person for that then I will just have to remain a terrible person.

Perhaps Yahmes is the minority, but he will have his say.  I won’t make any more posts or comments anywhere else.  The only reason I posted this and continue to comment is to point out to others who may feel different how a few people are giving this site a bad reputation.  As I stated in the post, I have already made up my mind.  But if you (the collective group) want to keep a good reputation, you might want to reign in the loose cannons.  It’s not for me to say how this site should be run.  I will be gone soon enough.

I am sure there are plenty of really nice and good people here.  But that isn’t my first impression.  I do hope you all have a nice day.

I have no problem with you
I have no problem with you or your response, except your choice of the word “unfriendly”, which seems to be a sticking point with you. Perhaps we are using the language in two different ways.

Noah’s initial response was very friendly. It also happened to be wrong, but he did say that it worked for him and that he wasn’t sure of it. He accepts criticism well.

His response that it was only a $9.00 board, well I’ll admit that that was insensitive, but still not unfriendly.

I have no problem with your response. You’re the one blowing it up much bigger than it should be. I think this is a semantic argument.

The remarks in the SB to you were unfriendly. Noah’s posts in this instance were incorrect and insensitive.

Haven’t you had a friend who believed in a flat rate income tax or that we never made a moon flight or didn’t know how to wire a house properly, and still let their opinions be known and were quite willing to give (bad) advice?

I’m a n00b of LMR, but a long term veteran of dance music forum and if there is any advice I could give, it’s that if you take anything on the internet seriously enough to be personally offended then you are doing it wrong.

also note that

The shoutbox is really ephemeral, doesn’t store old messages, is real easy to tamper with(like change text on a html page) and it’s public to all. You can see online members just under the shoutbox also.

Posts are persistent and any conversation which need to last more than 10min or helpful should be written as posts.

I sometime post incorrect advice, even if i try to document myself as best i can before posting. To be totally safe read all contents “AS IS” , with all the faults and mistakes
