Motor Encoders

I’ve just ordered the A4WD1 robot (no electronics) kit and i’ve noticed that you cannot purchase separate motor encoders, like the QME-01, for them. At best, you can purchase motors with encoders already attached to them (GHM-15). I really would like a compatible motor encoder but it’s too late for me to buy the motor chassis and motors with encoders separately. For my application, my robot will be travelling on smooth surfaces.

  1. Can anyone recommend a motor encoder that is compatible with the A4WD1 that i can purchase separately?
  2. How many motor encoders should i use per A4WD1? I understand 2 is sufficient. Would 4 motor encoders (on all 4 motors) improve resolution?
  3. Can anyone recommend a good optical-based encoder that is compatible with the A4WD1?
  4. Can someone make a comment on the use of motor encoders vs optical encoders?

Thanks very much

Imran

We made the chassis available separately so you could put the motors you wanted with the chassis. We are out of the motors that use the US digital encoders. They will be back in stock by January. The GHM-15 is available and has a quadrature encoder built in.
