This is a nice video from a while ago describing how to quickly and cheaply put together a robot by using an old RC toy, an Arduino (actually a Seeeduino), a Ping distance sensor and a couple of other components.

I so wish I was clever enough to create a toy robot like this! There’s something that’s so much more satisfying about creating something yourself. Sadly though it’s going to be a long time before I’m making anything do more than merely go back and forward me thinks!
